5 Habits to Create the Best Morning Routine

Want to create the best morning routine to power through your day? Then this is the perfect blog for you. These are my own favourite habits that have helped me and will help you create the perfect morning routine that suits you. So let’s get started.

Hydrate upon waking.

While you’re asleep, your body is hard at work healing and restoring for 6-9 hours and this process uses up a lot of water.  As soon as you wake up, hydrate as soon as possible to replenish the liquid you lost overnight. Consuming water on an empty stomach is also a great way to detoxify and gently wake up your digestive tract, thus improving gut health.

To make this a habit, put a glass of water near the first thing you do each morning.  If the first thing you do it read in bed, then have a water bottle next to your bed for when you wake up.  If the first thing you do is go to the bathroom to get ready, then keep a water bottle next to the bathroom sink.  The first thing I do in the morning is go to the kitchen to make my morning latte so every night I fill a 24-ounce jar of my morning hydration cocktail (Ultima electrolytes + water + 8 drops of Rhodiola) and place it right in front of the coffee machine.  That way it reminds me that I need to hydrate first.

Learn or reflect, or both.

Take a few minutes to dedicate to your personal growth either by learning about something new or boosting self-awareness.  Listen to a podcast or audio book while doing a chore.  Or sit and read a chapter out of a book to get your brain into a growth mindset at the beginning of each day.  You can also write in your journal whatever thoughts come to mind, what you’re grateful for or what your intentions are for the day to come.   Another option would be to listen to a guided meditation which focuses on some aspect of growth and/or reflection.

Prepare the night before.

A successful morning routine doesn’t start when you open your eyes, it starts the night before.  Dedicate some time during your evening routine to get some things ready for the following day. Some examples may include: preparing your breakfast and morning hydration, laying out your clothes, or setting your coffee maker to auto-brew.

Incorporate movement.

Moving as soon as possible in the morning is an excellent way to wake up and get your blood and lymph circulating. Movement is beneficial to just about every system in the human body and you can increase the benefits by exercising outside. The list of benefits you get from the movement + fresh air + natural light combination is endless but here’s the short list:

  • Reduces stress, anxiety and depression
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Improved cognitive function (i.e. helps you stay focused throughout the day)
  • Significantly reduces risk of chronic disease
  • Improves energy levels

I really enjoy taking a quick walk around the block in the mornings while the sun is coming up.  Some days I’ll multi-task and listen to a podcast while I’m walking but other days I’ll leave my phone at home and just enjoy the sunrise.

Identify your big 3.

Taking some time to identify 3 things that you’re going to accomplish today is a great way to start the day.  You’ll also increase your chances of accomplishing these things if you have a morning routine with the previously listed habits, though.  Just make sure that the 3 things you set out to do are realistic given anything else you have scheduled for that day – otherwise you’re setting yourself up for failure (and I speak from experience on that one!).

This was it, folks. I hope these 5 habits help you create your own morning routine and increase your productivity. If you are looking for more healthy habits check out my blog on “The Science of Habits“.
